Downtown Development and RevitalizationThe City Planning Department employs one full time Main Street Program Manager to oversee the development and revitalization of the Historic Central Business District of Henderson. The Main Street Manager serves as the staff person for the Henderson-Vance Downtown Development Commission (DDC); a non-profit, volunteer board of directors whose sole purpose is to combat deterioration in the downtown area. With six committees and a monthly board meeting, the DDC identifies, fosters and promotes growth by undertaking projects that improve the quality of downtown for the benefit of the community. The Main Street Program Manager also works closely with the North Carolina Main Street Program within the Division of Community Assistance in the North Carolina Department of Economic and Community Development. The N.C. Main Street Center provides guidance, training, and network assistance to all NC Main Street Communities. The foundation of the Main Street Program is preservation: using those elements of quality that have survived as assets upon which to build lasting, positive physical and emotional images for everyone who uses downtown. Henderson Central Business Historic District Composing 16 square blocks and occupying approximately 46 acres, Hendersons Central Business Historic District was accepted on the National Register of Historic Places in August of 1987.The National Register is a list of properties "significant in American history, architecture, archeology, and culture - a comprehensive index of the significant physical evidences of our national patrimony". The district contains 128 structures. Most of the buildings date from the period 1885-1929 with examples from the periods immediately prior to and after these dates. Almost all retain original second and third floor facades and detailing giving the district a remarkable turn-of-the century appearance.
