One of the areas of concern for any website that offers a lot of
information is, how to present it to people so that it is useful to
them. In static web sites, new information is often added and the
length of the pages grows while their usefulness declined. Our website is dynamic and structures
the presentation.
What does this mean? This time we will refer to the "Departmental
Contact Information" page. If this information were to
be presented on a single page, it would be a very
long page and difficult to find what you are looking for in it.
Whether you go to the
Departmental Contact Information page and click on a link,
or use the menu and select a department there, you will be presented
with only the information you are seeking. For more information on
how this works see the Things Change....
page.
Another example of how data is structured to make it easier to
view and read is the
Garbage Collection
Schedule. Here all of the streets and days of Henderson are
listed. There are in fact more than 300 streets listed over a number
of pages. If this were all together in a single page, it would be
difficult to read and use. To make this easier, it has been broken
into pages of 20 streets at a time sorted alphabetically. At the end
of the list, you will see numbers that are underlined. Each of these
numbers corresponds to a group of 20 streets. You can see that they
progress by street name. It should take you only a couple of clicks
to find your street.
One other method of dealing with large documents is to convert
them into PDF files and place links to
these files on the web for you to view or download to your computer.
In the past, things such as press releases and minutes from City
Council Meetings were converted into web pages and then the links to
these new pages had to be updated. This is a very manual and time
consuming process for which there was often not enough time.
Now these documents are converted into PDF files and the database
is updated with the file name. Not only is this faster, it helps
with ease of finding and retrieving the information.
Another place this system has been implemented is in the
Press Releases for the
Police Department. These are sorted by date with the most recent
date being the first listed. Additionally, these are broken into
years with the current year first and then going back to the oldest
PR in the system. You can see the years before the listing of press
releases. To see press releases for another year, click on that year
in the list of years.
New Press Releases will be in PDF format while previous ones are still
shown as a web page. When you are done viewing or printing a press
release, you can just close the window. |
